My First Month-ish in Houston

It's been a little over 6 weeks since I moved to Houston and I thought I'd update y'all on what has been going on and how I'm liking Texas so far.

My first week was kind of a blur. My parents and I arrived to a very rainy Houston and my parents weren't too happy that I live on the third floor and my complex doesn't have an elevator. That was my once a year workout and I cried at least three times because I was so frustrated and sweaty. But we got all my shit upstairs and next time I move, I'm splurging on getting people to move my stuff for me because I don't have the effort to ever do that again. I'll probably do an apartment tour once I have it fully decorated. Later on in the week, my parents and I went to San Antonio for the day since it's only a few hours away. They left that Friday and then I was officially on my own.

That first weekend, I finally met my internet friend Rachel, who is the one who basically got me my job, and we went out to a local bar in Midtown since I've clearly never been. It was so much fun even though traffic from her end was terrible and I sat at the bar for an hour by myself #lonerstatus. The next day, Rachel, her friends and boyfriend, and I went to my first Astros game. We didn't make it to the game until the 6th inning because we were enjoying some adult beverages but it was still fun! Minute Maid Stadium even has a Mickey Mouse statue dressed as an Astros player and I obviously had to take a photo with it because Disney 4 lyfe.

On Monday June 25th, I started my job! It is so weird having a real job where I'm not working in a theme park, restaurant, or clothing store. I'm salaried and have benefits!!! Woooo! I'm a real adult now I guess. Not going to lie, I'm still struggling a bit at work because I don't come from a cybersecurity or sales background but every day, I become a little more confident. The people I work with are great and all very supportive which is awesome. Plus I get to work with my internet-turned-real life bff Rachel so it's pretty cool.

The following weeks were somewhat eventful. I spent 4th of July with Rachel and her family at their house, went to a beer festival even though I don't like beer and did a ghost tour one Saturday night, and went to a pool party two weekends ago. Rachel, crew, and I also went to the Museum of Fine Arts this past Saturday after brunch. I also started doing Pure Barre because sitting at a desk all day is a hard transition from being on your feet all the time. Surprisingly enough, I have fallen in love with Pure Barre! I never thought I'd enjoy any sort of workout but I go to Pure Barre 3-4 times a week and I'm already noticing the changes in my body. I plan on writing a blog post about my Pure Barre experience and my before and after pictures!

Living in your own apartment by yourself is really weird. I've had roommates of some sort since freshman year of college and now it's just me and my cats. I love it though. As much as I've loved some of my roommates from the past, I was beyond ready to live alone. Theodore is doing great and he loves having a lot of space to run around and I ended up adopting another cat named Dobby because Theo was lonely. They are now bffs and love chasing each other around the apartment and wrestling like typical boys.

Everyone I've met here thinks I'm absolutely insane for moving to state I've never been to or have many friends in on a whim. But when you're 23 with no kids, no husband, no roots, and the ability to move around, why not do it? I'm not going to lie though, it's been a huge culture shock compared to living in the Chicagoland area. But it has been such a learning experience and probably one of the best life choices I've ever made. I'm falling more and more in love with this city and I'm so glad that I get to call it my new home. I can't wait to make more memories here and maybe this will end up being my forever home but who knows with my track record of moving to random cities.
